Super-Celestial Events in the Near Future!
Rachel Murphy|May 1, 2021
Being at home all the time takes a toll on your physical and mental health. That’s why it’s more important than ever to go outside and get some fresh air every day. These upcoming astronomical events are a great excuse to create an outdoor watch party with your friends or family.
A super moon occurs on the day that a full moon is closest to the earth, which is typically 90% within the earth’s orbit. Each month has a different classification of what Super Moon would occur if it happened in that month. This year, there are three super moons beginning in the spring. The names of these moons originated from both Native American traditions and farming calendars.
Additionally, on May 17, Mercury will be at its closest viewing point making it visible without using a telescope. You will get the best view if you view it at its peak during sunset.
April 26: Pink Moon
April is the Pink Moon. This supermoon will occur on April 26 and be at its peak brightness around 11:30 at night. However, it will not appear to be a vibrant pink as some may assume but it will give off a pink and gold tint visible to the eye. It was given its name because April is the time of year when Moss Pink, a type of wildflower, starts to bloom.
May 26: Flower Moon
The next super moon will occur on May 26 and it’s called the Flower Moon. The Flower Moon is supposed to be the biggest and brightest moon of the year. It reflects even more light than usual from the sun, which gives it an illuminated appearance. The peak brightness of this moon can be seen at 7:14 in the morning. The Flower Moon received its name because it appears around during the time of year when many flowers are in full bloom.
June 24: Strawberry Moon
The last supermoon of the year is the Strawberry Moon which will occur on June 24. Like the Pink Moon, the strawberry moon will not have a vivid or bright pink or red look, but rather a shade of gold and orange. Farmers refer to June as the prime time for growing strawberries. This moon will reach its peak brightness at 2:40 pm.
Although it is not visible to the human eye, super moons are 14% larger and 30% brighter than regular full moons. Super moons are a fun event, whether it’s super bright and visible, or not. Gather your friend and head outside late at night or early in the morning.
May 26: Lunar Eclipse
Super moons are not the only astronomical events happening in the near future. This a rare occurrence and it’s called a Blood Moon. This eclipse will not be available for us to see.
June 10: Partial Solar Eclipse
On June 10 the Prince William County area is able to see a partial solar eclipse which will begin around 4am and end at 9am. This eclipse is most visible in the western area of America but still does not show a full lunar eclipse.
July 17-August 24: Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseid Meteor Shower will be fully visible to this area beginning July 17 until August 24. The Perseid meteor shower is one of the brightest meteor showers of the year. The best time to view this meteor shower would be at its peak from August 10-13 in the middle of the night.
These are just some of the many astronomical events happening in the near future. Many more will be happening later in the year, so be sure to catch an event before it’s too late! For more astronomical event happening in 2021,
