The Power of Our Generation
Chelsea Chisolm|Oct 2, 2020
The Millennial generation holds such a unique stance in America right now. We are the generation that is pushing numerous movements for the advancement of our people. For example: The Me-Too Movement, BLM Movement, the Pride Movement etc. In addition to these movements, we push for environmental protection, animal rights, and so much more. We should not say that we are trailblazing and pioneering these movements, but we do have an important role to play. Within our generation we have people that are of age to vote. The people that are within this generation can utilize this power on behalf of all the rest of us to get our point across thoroughly.
Over the past few elections Gen Z, Gen X and Millennials have had the largest turnout at the voting polls because we understand how important voting is to our future. We can always keep marching, protesting and writing letters of complaints to officials, but the only way to make real change starts with who we elect into office. Yes, we, meaning our generation! Our parents vote too, of course, but we are the ones that will inevitably be inheriting this country. According to Patriot senior Nevaeh Bouie, “The choices we make will affect us more than older generations.” If we start voting and making changes now, by the time we are our parents’ age we will be proud of how far we have come.
However, the idea of voting intimidates so many young voters because it is a big step to take. Thankfully, the process is not as nerve wracking as it seems to be.
In the state of Virginia registering to vote is not as scary as it seems to be. First, you must be very watchful on deadlines. For example, the deadline for registration online, by mail, in person was Oct 13, 2020. Multiple social media platforms have created hyperlinks to make registration easier. Platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat have joined this train. The absentee ballot deadlines must be requested by Oct, 23 , 2020. The absentee ballot has to be returned by Nov. 3, 2020 and for in person it has to be turned in that same day at 7:00 pm. Early voting is conducted Sept. 18 – Oct. 31 of 2020. However, these dates vary by state. Any citizen of the United States that is a resident of Virginia could vote but, there are requirements. You must be 18 or 17 by the time of the election to be eligible to vote.
Voting is a fundamental right that we should take advantage of every time election season comes around. This election is no ordinary election. This is our future! We need to start owning this and accepting that we are not children anymore. The only way to shape this country into what we want is by voting and putting people in charge who have our best interests at heart.
