In the season of Friday night lights and roaring crowds, golf might not always grab people’s attention, but these athletes have skills that go far beyond the fairway. From mastering the mental game, to forming a team bond in an individual sport, they are learning about discipline, teamwork,  and the art of perfection one hole at a time. 

Team bonding may seem unimportant in golf, as it’s a primarily individual sport. Having a strong team bond, though, can be crucial to your individual success. “If you play good then it reciprocates throughout the whole team,” said Sebastian Daniel (‘28). The long matches and abundance of practices lead to the team spending countless hours together. These moments help build the trust and support that they take out to the course. “Sometimes they like to go out to breakfast together or go out after a round and get some food to build that team chemistry up,” said Assistant Coach Bradley Rizzutto. The team at Patriot provides a support system that extends beyond the sport.  

 Professional Golfer Jack Nicklaus once said “The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% physical”. Players must manage pressure, maintain focus for hours, and overcome setbacks. Only a few players get chosen for tournaments, for example, that can be discouraging for the others. The individuality of the sport can also put a lot of pressure on an athlete. If a player makes a bad swing, they don’t have anyone to blame but themselves. Golf is also a very time-consuming sport, with matches lasting usually 5 hours. Madlyn Christian (‘26), a member of the golf team said, “During golf season it takes up a lot of my time…the coaches help me to find ways to balance out meetings and practices.”  

High school golf is more than just a sport. The dedication, physically and mentally, is a testament to the players’ commitment and the coach’s guidance. The team at Patriot High School shows exemplary acts of teamwork and character. “We all just really work together really well and we all just have a lot of fun,” said Connor Doxey (‘27). As the season progresses, the team will continue to strive for excellence. Check out Patriot’s athletic website for information about times and dates for their matches.
